Sepia cuttlefish ink is a natural pigment historically derived from the ink sacs of the cuttlefish, specifically from the genus Sepia, which is where it gets its name. This ink has been used for centuries as a rich, dark brown pigment, prized for its warm, earthy tones. The color it produces ranges from deep brown to nearly black, with a slightly reddish or purplish undertone, depending on the concentration.

Sepia ink has excellent transparency and is often used in washes or glazes, allowing for subtle gradations of tone. While modern sepia inks and pigments are often synthetically produced to mimic the original, traditional sepia cuttlefish ink remains valued for its historical significance and the unique depth of colour it provides.
