Colour

Matisse Background Colours are a highly pigmented, low-tooth coloured gesso from Derivan. Use them as a coloured primer or base coat for painting and pastel work on almost any surface. They are especially designed for canvas and board, and on wood the built-in sealer also seals the surface. Apply with a brush or roller.

The paint dries to a matt-velvet finish within a few hours. Matisse Background Colours are water-based, made with non-toxic pigments, and manufactured in Australia.

Colours available

  • Australian Sky Blue Light (formerly Whisper Blue)
  • Ash Grey Pink 5 (formerly Whisper Pink)
  • Brown Yellow (formerly Straw)
  • Terracotta
  • Victorian Grey
  • Warm Sienna (formerly Caromello)

Only the names have changed. The colours are the same.

Tips

  • Apply in thin coats, no more than 0.5mm thick, to prevent cracking.
  • Wait at least 24 hours before varnishing or working on top.
  • Mix with Matisse Transparent Gesso MM26 to make a coloured primer with extra tooth for painting.
